York Hill

Difficulty: 3/5

Location: Loughton

Length: 0.4km

Height Gain: 34m

Average gradient: 9%

Loughton is an urban area built on the Epping Forest ridge and therefore is home to its fair share of short steep streets.  Of these, the one that stands out as close to resembling a climb is York Hill.  The road begins steep, a consistent 8% slope punctuated by short burst of tough gradient.  To the left, a number of very steep streets leave your road and tempt you to take their path – stick with York Hill, for the final 50m are worth it.  A ramp of 20% heads straight upwards and ends at a pub car park.  Turn around and survey the view over London, you can see for miles.  Now head back down and try an alternative ending.
