South Hill

Difficulty: 5/5

Location: Langdon Hills

Length: 1.7km

Height Gain: 91m

Average gradient: 5%

I went too hard at the start of this tough climb and paid the price on its higher slopes.  It is hard to determine the start of the climb (it is marginally uphill all the way from Stanford) but the gradient begins to hurt as the road straightens out past a residential area.  It is here that you reach the cruellest 600m in East Anglia.  There are no bends, just a 10% ramp which pushes you well into the red.  Round a left hand bend and into woodland, the gradient eases off.  To your left, the view between the trees is remarkable.
