THE CYCLING CLIMBS OF EAST ANGLIA
Somerton

Difficulty: 3/5
Location: Somerton, Clare
Length: 1.3km
Height Gain: 53m
Average gradient: 4%

Beginning over the River Glem, the minor road up to the isolated hamlet of Upper Somerton is quintessential Suffolk – quiet, serene and not too steep. As with many Suffolk climbs, the lower slope is the hardest, about 10%. After this short ramp, you are given time to recover as the road dips down over a small brook. Following this, the climb winds up through the meadows at a steady 5%. Find a rhythm and enjoy the rolling scenery. For one last kick, turn left at the T-junction and head up the dead end road into Upper Somerton.
