Mott Street

Difficulty: 5/5

Location: Epping Forest

Length: 2.1km

Height Gain: 84m

Average gradient: 4%

This is the toughest climb in East Anglia (not the most prestigious title amongst English roads but nonetheless true) and has been rewarded with two 12% gradient signs marking this.  It has a long false flat beginning but truly gets going after about 800m with one of two sections of tough gradient.  After this has eased back, regain your strength and prepare for a very nasty 500m.  This section will surprise you – around a right hand bend comes a ramp far steeper than you were expecting.  Here is where the pain comes and, for once in East Anglia, the slope does not peter out before you feel you've had a chance to enjoy it.
