Horseshoe Hill

Difficulty: 5/5

Location: Upshire

Length: 3.1km

Height Gain: 88m

Average gradient: 3%

This hill is in fact made up of two – Horseshoe Hill and Crown Hill, both adorned with 10% gradient signs and with a short descent in between them.  The overall effect is a very tough climb.  Begin beside a primary school in Upshire.  The slope begins to ramp up as you leave the village, reaching a 12% apex.  Here the road sweeps right and you begin the short descent past a pub.  Regain your breath as you pass under the M25 and prepare to work.  The next section is truly tough – the road rises again around a slight bend and then hard past some houses.  This being East Anglia, the pain doesn't last long and you can relax as the road enters Epping Forest.  It is worth noting that the traffic on this road, despite it being unclassified, can be pretty heavy and may be enough to spoil an otherwise fine climb.
