THE CYCLING CLIMBS OF EAST ANGLIA
Hartest Hill

Difficulty: 4/5
Location: Hartest, Clare
Length: 0.5km
Height Gain: 34m
Average gradient: 7%

At about 16%, this is reputed to be the steepest hill in Suffolk. As you descend into Hartest in an easterly direction, you can see the ridge posturing formidably behind the chocolate-box village. Cross the stream at the climb's base and prepare for 2 minutes of painful effort. The first left-hand bend is tough and will have you clicking down the gears in anticipation. Round the corner, you are met with the brutal ramp. However, it is very hard to build up any momentum to bring onto the steepest section, you will already be crawling. The only option is to leave the saddle and hope you can generate enough power to reach the brow.
