THE CYCLING CLIMBS OF EAST ANGLIA
Gas Hill

Difficulty: 4/5
Location: Norwich
Length: 0.2km
Height Gain: 30m
Average gradient: 15%

It is rare to find an East Anglian average gradient which exceeds 10%, making Gas Hill a real treasure, albeit only 200m long. Nevertheless, this climb is really worth the journey as, once there, you can keep climbing it and Telegraph Lane to your heart's content. The first 100m are unpleasant – 14% right from the off. At about halfway, you are forced out of the saddle as the road possibly exceeds 20%. Central Norwich is a populated area and your effort will no doubt be scrutinised by a number of pedestrians heaving themselves up the pavement. Not only this but, when I visited, the road was desperately in need of repair. Squint hard enough and this could be a slope of the Tour of Flanders.
