THE CYCLING CLIMBS OF EAST ANGLIA
Colam Lane

Difficulty: 3/5
Location: Little Baddow, Chelmsford
Length: 2.0km
Height Gain: 80m
Average gradient: 4%

The North Hill ridge, east of Chelmsford is a Mecca for the cyclists of Essex. This route to the top, made up of two lanes, is not the toughest route but it is a little quieter than its more famous neighbour. Begin crossing the river south of Boreham and settle into a rhythm. The first half (Church Road) is less steep than the second half (Colam Lane) so it might pay to keep some energy in reserve. Turning right onto Colam Lane, the gradient shift isn't apparent until you bend left into picturesque woodland. This second half is a wonderful ride – a challenging slope, a quiet road and pristine surroundings.
