THE CYCLING CLIMBS OF EAST ANGLIA
Blood Hill

Difficulty: 5/5
Location: Somersham
Length: 1.7km
Height Gain: 46m
Average gradient: 3%

This was the penultimate climb I rode on my tour of East Anglia's peaks and it is without doubt my favourite. In order to include as much altitude gain as possible I began the climb from the river in Somersham but the first 1.4km average only 1%. This section will do little more than halt your momentum travelling into the very tough final 300m which average over 10%. Not only is the gradient challenging, the road surface is in tatters and stinging nettles interrupt your progress along the narrow road. As the road reaches its steepest it twists right and then left, hemmed in by trees. This is the toughest ascent in Suffolk by some margin.
