Bird Lane

Difficulty: 5/5

Location: Warley, Brentwood

Length: 1.6km

Height Gain: 80m

Average gradient: 5%

This brutal climb is set in a beautiful woodland on smooth tarmac and a stiff gradient.  All things considered, it was set to be a great climb.  However, when I attempted to ride it, it was all but ruined by a stream of motor vehicles packed into the narrow road, despite the presence of a B-road running parallel to it!  Nonetheless, at a quieter time I have no doubts that this is one of the finest roads in East Anglia.  The gradient comes at you in two nasty sections of 13%, the second longer than the first.  After the first effort, regain your breath as the road in front of you heads upwards past a farm.  Leave the saddle and dance on your pedals as a steep drop opens up to your left and, for just a brief few minutes, you could be on the lower slopes of a mountain pass.
